Martina makes her move at La Manga
Ireland’s Martina Gillen produced one of the rounds of the day to move into position to retain her Ladies European Tour card at the Qualifying School final in Spain.
The Beaverstown player shot a two under par 69 in the fourth round on the North Course at La Manga to move up 12 places to tied 15th on seven over par heading into Sunday’s final round.
The top 30 players after 90 holes will earn their full card for next season’s tour in category 8a. Those in positions 31 to 50 and ties will earn an exemption status in category 11a with limited tournament starts.
Gillen began with eight straight pars before picking up birdies at the ninth, 10th and 12th before dropping her only shot of the day at the par-five 15th.
The 72-hole cut for the low 50 players and ties fell at 15-over par but there was no luck for Royal County Down amateur Danielle McVeigh.
The Curtis Cup star, who pre-qualified for the LET Q-School before trying in vain for her LPGA Tour card in the US, finished last on 31 over par after adding a 79 to previous round of 81, 77 and 82.
Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall shot a one-under par 70 on the North Course to take a three stroke cushion into Sunday’s final round at seven-under-par 281.
