Ulster champion Barrie Trainor double bogeyed his final hole but still kicked off his season with a share of tenth place in the Polaris World Mar Menor Open on the Hi5 Pro Tour in Spain.

The Warrenpoint man, 28, shot a one under par 71 in the third and final round at the Murcia venue but slipped back to one under par overall after a nasty six at the 18th.

England’s Matthew Evans sealed his first professional victory and earned a cheque for €4,125 in the first event of the €100,000 Polaris Swing when he birdied his last three holes to card a 69 and win by three shots from Scotland’s Jack Doherty on 11 under par.

Geoff Loughrey shot a 71 and Derry’s Michael McGeady a 75 to finish tied for 27th on four over par.
