Rosses Point won’t be hosting the Walker Cup in 2015.

Rumour has been rife for weeks that County Sligo would become just the third Irish club to stage the biggest team event in amateur golf.

But sources close to the R&A Championship Committee, who did not wishing to be named, explained: “The venue has been chosen but it’s not an Irish course. I believe there will be an announcement soon.”

Ireland hosted the Walker Cup at Portmarnock in 1991 and Royal County Down in 2007 when tour stars Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson took part.

The Americans will be going for their fourth win in a row when they take on a Great Britain and Ireland side captained by Welshman Nigel Edwards at Royal Aberdeen next year.
