Leona Maguire fired a second successive 69 for her final 36 holes to win the British Women’s Strokeplay Championship by an incredible six shots from Belgium’s Laurence Herma at Royal Ashdown.

Two shots off the pace in joint third overnight, the 16-year old Cavan twin ended the morning round an astonishing five strokes clear of the field after a best of the championship 69.

She continued her brilliance in the afternoon by finishing birdie-birdie for another 69, completely obliterating the field.

Charlene Reid (Royal Portrush) was next best of the Irish after closing round of 72 and 81 while Sarah Cunningham (Ennis) wrapped up her tournament with two 78s.

Following in the footsteps of 2009 champion Danielle McVeigh’s , Leona now adds her first British title to her ever-expanding trophy cabinet and can now, along with sister Lisa, truely celebrate their selection on the European team for the PING Junior Solheim Cup, announced two days ago. The Irish squad arrive back from London Gatwick into Dublin Airport at 22:40 tonight, Friday, 19 August.

In the International Team event, England pipped Ireland on countback for the 2011 title after both finished with aggregates of 305 over the first two rounds of the British Women’s Open Amateur Stroke-play championship at Royal Ashdown Forest. England’s better second-round total of 150 to Ireland’s 151 was the deciding issue.
