Warrenpoint on track for Cups and Shields hat-trick
The ninth green at Castlerock Golf Club.Warrenpoint will meet Tramore in the final of the Barton Shield in what is the first leg of their All-Ireland treble attempt at the Chartis Cups and Shields finals at a magnificent Castlerock, writes the Golfing Union of Ireland.
The Ulster champions, who also have teams competing in the Jimmy Bruen Shield and Senior Cup competitions on Friday, beat Enniscorthy by six holes in their semi-final, while Tramore hung on against a resolute Athenry to win by two holes.
Elsewhere, Michael McSherry’s miraculous comeback sealed Lurgan’s place in the Junior Cup final against Mitchelstown.
Lurgan accounted for Co Meath when McSherry got up and down from right of the 18th green to square his match with Michael Gaynor, and then won the match on the first extra playoff hole to set up a deciding clash with Mitchelstown, who accounted for 2008 All-Ireland champions Ballina.
In Thursday’s other action, meanwhile, the semi-finals of the Pierce Purcell Shield will see Corrstown meeting Letterkenny while Woodstock take on Athenry.
