Ireland hanging on at Sotogrande
Ireland is just a shot clear of the chasing pack entering the final round of the European Nations Cup at Sotogrande.
Bidding for a wire-to-wire victory, the four-man side finished the day one better than Holland on 658 with hosts Spain on 660 and another four nations within seven shots of their lead.
Mourne’s Reeve Whitson shot a level par 72 but now only shares the lead in the individual standings with Spain’s Jon Rahm Rodriguez on two under.
Holland’s Robin Kind is just a shot off the lead on one under after a 66 with Portugal’s Gonçalo Pinto (71) fourth on 216 and Ballymena’s Dermot McElroy fifth on one-over 217 after a third round 74.
Muskerry’s Niall Gorey slipped to a six over 78 to share 29th place on 227 with an out-of-sorts Alan Dunbar Ireland’s non-counting score for the third day in a row.
The Walker Cup player from Rathmore added an 80 to previous rounds of 78 and 82 to lie tied for 64th on 240.
