O'Leary leads at The Island
Gillian O’Leary leads the Irish Women’s Open Strokeplay at the IslandCork’s Gillian O’Leary added a 77 to her opening 79 to lead the Irish Women’s Open Amateur Strokeplay by one stroke going into Sunday’s final round at The Island Golf Club, writes the ILGU.
In blustery conditions, O’Leary was a model of consistency throughout the day with birdies on the first and tenth holes in the afternoon to consolidate her overnight lead. England’s Emily Taylor fired a best-of-the-day 72 to lie second with Ireland’s Deirdre Smith (Co. Louth), Mary Dowling (New Ross), Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell), Maria Dunne (Skerries) and Charlene Reid (Royal Portrush) following menacingly behind.
Earlier in the day, Donaghadee’s Jessica Ross led the field by one stroke at lunchtime after an opening 78 in the height of the gusts over the links terrain.
In 35 mile an hour winds, Ross punched well above her weight to lead the field of current Irish Internationals alongside Scotland’s Hannah McCook on 79 after the first round as competitors struggled in the trying conditions.
Ireland B leads the Nations Cup from Ireland A by two strokes with Scotland in third and England fourth.
The field, now cut to 41, tee off at 8am with the leaders hearing the starter’s orders at 10.48am.
