Picture Pat Cashman/www.cashmanphotography.ieTeenage sensation Olivia Mehaffey took a giant step towards a call up for Junior Vagliano Trrophy duty when she finished an impressive sixth in the Helen Holm Scottish Amateur Open at Royal Troon.

The 16-year old from Royal County Down Ladies closed with a two under 73, mixing birdies at the par-five second, 11th and 12th with a solitary bogey at the 10th to grab the attention of the Great Britain and Ireland selectors.

Winner of Faldo Junior Series Ireland event at Lough Erne and the Irish Girls Open Strokeplay over the past 11 days, the Co Down star will be hopeful of being selected for the clash with Europe when the team for Chantilly is named in June.

Slieve Russell’s Leona Maguire carded a level par 75 to finish 10th on one over with Castletroy’s Chloe Ryan two shots further back on three over in joint 12th.

Skerries Maria Dunne shot a 78 to finish joint 14th on four over with Holywood’s Jessica Carty (79) tied for 18th on plus five.

England’s Olivia Winning completed an impressive wire-to-wire win after rounds of 70, 72 and 78 left her two clear of Scotland’s Alyson McKechin (74) and compatriot Poppy Finlay (76) on five under.

Curtis Cup stars Amy Boulden and Bronte Law finished joint fourth after rounds of 80 and 78 respectively as Mehaffey shared sixth with England’s Rachael Goddall to complete another impressive performance.
