The former Curtis Cup star from Royal County Down Ladies carded a best-of-the-day, three-under par 69 to lead with Belgium’s Chloe Leurquin and Sweden’s Lina Boqvist on one-under par.

The trio are a shot clear of Finland’s Sofia Harkonen (70) and Linda Henriksson (71) with the top 16 players covered by just four strokes.

“Nice wee 69 today, beaut eagle to finish #thatsmorelikeit,” a delighted McVeigh tweeted.

McVeigh, who finished tied ninth  in last month’s Ocho Golf Ladies Open, birdied the par-three 11th, bogeyed the 12th but then birdied the 15th and 18th to turn in 34.

After a birdie at the fourth put her three under for the day, she bogeyed the sixth and seventh but hit back with that eagle at her final hole to set up a chance of a maiden professional victory in Friday’s final round.

Thirty-four professionals and five amateurs made the cut, which fell at seven over par.

Carlow’s Tara Delaney, who continues to battle valiently for her breakthrough, missed by six shots after adding a 79 to her opening 78.
