Weldon shines at Burhill
Richard Weldon’s Europro Tour season is off and running after he opened with a four under 68 around the New Course at Burhill in the Kerry London Championship.
Out in one under thanks to a lone birdie at the 16th, he came home in three under with birdies and the first, second , fifth and sixth with a solitary bogey at the seventh leaving him tied for third and just two strokes behind leader Richard Wallis (66).
Royal Dublin’s Niall Kearney was the best of the rest of the Irish with a one under 71 as Rosapenna’s Ruaidhri McGee, former Walker Cup player Paul Cutler and Old Conna’s Neil O Briain shot one over 73s.
Newlands’ Cian Curley battled his swing but was pleased to limit the damage to a three over 75 and shre 78th with The Island’s David Rawluk and Limerick’s Tim Rice.
It was a day to forget for Ballinasloe’s Mark Staunton and Loughgall’s Wayne Telford as they signed for 79s while Michael McGeady was reeling after six dropped shots in his first six holes and carded an 81.
