McGinlay wins North Western Golfing Alliance captain's prize

Stewart McGinlay won captain Michael McGeady's prize in the final North Western Golfing Alliance outing of the season at North West Golf Club.
The North West four-handicapper had both the best nett and gross scores of a showery day, winning by a singe point from fellow clubman Terry Meenan with 38 points.
In the gross, course record holder Brian McElhinney was two strokes ahead of his pursuers after nine holes but shot 74 to finish third behind Michael McGeady (74) as Damian Mooney took top prize with a 73.
According to our correspondent:
"There was an unfortunate disqualification for one player, who was a potential prize winner, when he handed in his card with only one signature on it.
"An interesting query on the rules came up when a player played a ball which he thought was his embedded in its own impression off the fairway. There was no relief so he played the 'ball'. To his horror it turned out to be half a ball.
"But he knew enough to penalise himself two strokes. The rule says he had made a stroke with a wrong ball and in match play he would have lost the hole and he was correct to give himself a two stroke penalty as he was playing stroke.
“In his speech at the presentation the Captain gave thanks to all the clubs who had hosted the alliance since September and thanked in particular his own club.
He was presented with his “Captain’s Medal” by his father Cahir who had been Captain of the Alliance in 2004/2005. This is the only father and son combination to date."
The Alliance will begin its 46th season under the captaincy of Brian Wallace in Letterkenny Golf Club on Saturday, 27th September 2014.
