Clare hurling boss Davy Fitzgerald made only a brief appearance in the Clarke Coast Hotels sponsored South of Ireland Amateur Open at Lahinch.
An 8 and 6 defeat to Shannon's Ed Hickey was something of a surprise and Hickey now goes on to face Seamus Cullen of Slieve Russell in Sunday's second round.
