Sharvin five adrift in Lytham Trophy as Hume and Moynihan miss cut

Sweden's world amateur No 2 Marcus Kinhult survived what Amateur champion Bradley Neil described as brutal conditions to open up a five-shot lead over Cormac Sharvin with two rounds to go in the Lytham Trophy.

But there was little good news for the rest of the 14-strong Irish contingent as Sharvin's fellow Walker Cup hopefuls Jack Hume and Gavin Moynihan were among the nine Irish to miss the cut.

Kinhult was the only player to shoot two scores under par, adding a 69 to his opening 68 to lead on three under 137 from Sharvin, who shot a 74. Richard James and Oliver Farrell are tied for third place at four-over 144.

Winner of the silver medal behind Italy's Renato Paratore in the Junior Olympics in China last year, Kinhult won the Sage Valley Invitational in his last start and he's head and shoulders above of the field as he showed when coming back from three over after three to break par in the second round.

After a bogey at the second and a double bogey at the third, he birdied the fourth and eighth to turn in one over 35 and came home in two under 34 with a solitary bogey at the 14th cancelled out by birdies at the 11th, 16th and 17th.

His 69 was the only sub-par score recorded on a wet and windy day, not to mention the lowest of the 144-strong field by two strokes.

West Waterford's Gary Hurley had four bogeys and a double bogey seven at the seventh in a 76, leaving him 13th alongside Bradley Neil on seven over par.

Stackstown's Richard Bridges shot a 74 for a nine over total that matched Portmarnock's Geoff Lenehan (69-80) while Ballymena's Dermot McElroy is 10 over after a 76.

It was a disappointing day for Hume, who dropped four shots in his last five holes for a 77 to miss the cut by one with Gary Collins (80, 153) and Moynihan (76, 154) also missing out.
