Gleeson shines in Wales as Mullen wins by 9
England's Jimmy Mullen left the rest for dead in the Welsh Open Strokeplay at Ashburnham, closing with rounds of 70 and 69 to win by nine shots on 15 under par.
Ashley Chesters (71 68) and Dean Westgate (72 72) shared second on six under with Castle's Alex Gleeson the best of the Irish in a share of fourth on five under after rounds of 71 and 72 on Sunday.
Gleeson's fellow clubman Daniel Holland had high hopes for the final day after a course record equalling 65 in the second round. But it was not to be as he added rounds of 73 and 77 to slip to tied 14th on three under.
Warrenpoint's Colm Campbell finished a stroke further back in 16th thanks to a closing 68 while Massereene's Tiarnan McLarnon and Ballymena's Dermot McElroy tied for 22nd on even par.
Kilkeel's William Hanna took 33rd on three over.
