Kinsale's Gary Ward shot a best of the day 71 to snatch a share of the lead in the Titleist sponsored Leinster Boys Amateur Open at Balcarrick.

Ward had six birdies in his two under effort to share the lead on one under 145 with Ballyhaunis's Andrew Hickey, who had three birdies in a fine 72.

They lead by a stroke from Dubai prodigy Rayhan Thomas, 15, who went out in 41 but stormed home in three under 34 with three birdies and no dropped shots for a battling 75.

Wentworth's Eoin Leonard, the 2013 champion who is off to Yale University in the autumn, climbed to tied fourth on one over 147 alongside Rosslare's John Brady (76) after a 73.

County Louth's Thomas Mulligan added a 74 to his first round 80 to make the eight over cut on the mark. But while the Island's Kevin LeBlanc followed his opening 83 with a 73, he failed to make the top 51 by two shots.

Dubai visitor Thomas has also entered the Mullingar Electrical Scratch Trophy at Mullingar Golf Club on Sunday and Monday next.
