Smith the only par-breaker in Connacht Boys

Castle's Darragh Smith fired the only sub par round of the day when he opened with a one under 69 to take a one stroke lead in the Connacht U18 Boys Open at Galway Golf Club.
Four birdies and three bogeys were enough for the Dubliner to set the pace by the minimum from Limerick's Ciaran Vaughan with Conor Meade (East Clare Golf Club), Seamus Burke (Mount Juliet Golf Club), Seán Carroll (Castle Dargan), Liam Nolan (Galway Golf Club) and Andrew Hickey (Ballyhaunis Golf Club) the next best on 72.
The recently crowned Irish Boys champion, Kilkenny's Mark Power, opened with a seven over 77 and lies tied 42nd, a shot outside the Top 39 who will make the 36 hole cut for the final round.
