Like many sports, golf has been depicted in many films over the years with varying success. There have been some great films that match up in excitement to US Open golf betting and some pretty terrible films we’d like to forget. In the better films there is some pretty good golf going on so we decided to list the top-six film characters who were good with a golf club:

Kevin Costner – Tin Cup

Kevin Costner plays Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, a down and out failed golf pro who lived and worked at a driving range until Dr. Molly Griswold walks into his life.

She’s the girlfriend of his annoying former golfing partner David Simms, and Roy and David have a bet on whether Tin Cup can reach the U.S. Open. Roy plays some spectacular and sometimes terrible golf on route to the U.S. Open final day.

Adam Sandler – Happy Gilmore

Happy Gilmore gave up on an unsuccessful career in Ice Hockey and slowly began to realise he’s got a super powered golf swing after some impromptu practice outside his grandmother’s house.

Tutored by Chubbs Peterson, a former #1 golfer, Happy begins to fulfil his potential as a great golfer and even ends up winning his grandmother’s house back and beating his nemesis; Shooter McGavin to win the gold jacket. You’ll spend the entire movie wishing you had his long game and laughing at his short game!

Gary Sinise – A Gentleman’s Game

While this film follows the fledgeling golfing career of Timmy Price it’s Foster Pearse (Gary Sinise) who steals the show.

Foster cheats his way through his one and only career win and never plays the game again after purposely running his car off the road through the guilt of cheating.

He strikes up an unlikely friendship with the young golfer while passing on his knowledge to Timmy and helps turn him into a great golfer at an exclusive East Coast country club.

Matt Damon – The Legend of Bagger Vance

The Legend of Bagger Vance received mostly negative reviews for a number of different reasons, not for the golf though.

There are some great sequences of the beautiful game in this movie and Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon) does his best to make it a worthwhile watch. There is a spectacular ace in the movie and the golf just gets better and better culminating in a surprising end.

Shia LaBeouf – The Greatest Game Ever Played

The Greatest Game Ever Played tells the unlikely story of the first amateur to ever win the U.S. Open. Francis Ouimet, a working class guy from an immigrant family, defies the odds in a sport that at the time was only accessible to the wealthy.

Shia LaBeouf plays Ouimet and does a great job with the golf sequences and the cinematography is done fantastically well. Whilst the film isn’t entirely accurate to what happened exactly, it’s a great watch for any golf enthusiast.

Rodney Dangerfield – Caddyshack

The late great Rodney Dangerfield plays Al Czervik a newly rich obnoxiously outspoken player at the upscale Bushwood Country Club in Caddyshack.

Unlike most films on this list, Caddyshack doesn’t take itself, or golf, too seriously. The film itself was a commercial and critical success and catapulted Rodney into the movie industry with good reason.

While the golf within this movie isn’t of the greatest quality it’s surely going to be a favourite for many golfers and comedy fans for years to come. The movie even convinced Rodney to play a bit of golf in his own time!
