Murphy just one back in St Andrews Links Trophy
Kinsale’s John Murphy was thrilled to fire a six-under 66 around the Old Course to go into the final 36 holes just one stroke off the lead in the St Andrews Links Trophy.
Set to begin his Junior year at the University of Louisville in the autumn, he’s looking to add to his wins in last year’s Munster and Leinster Youths championships and become just the third Irish winner of the prestigious 72-hole strokeplay event after Rathmore's Alan Dunbar (2009) and Naas' Conor O’Rourke (2016).
“Special day today shooting 66 on the old course at St.Andrews!” Murphy tweeted. “Looking forward to being in the final group of the St.Andrews links trophy tomorrow, should be fun.”
Rye’s Laird Shepard carded a seven-under 65 to lead by a stroke on eight-under from Murphy, who made five birdies and an eagle two at the sixth with his only blemish coming with a bogey at the fourth.
Just two of the 11-strong Irish contingent made the cut with Naas’ Jonathan Yates, who has shown form recently, posting a 70 to trail Shepard by just five-shots on three-under 140.
Massereene’s Tiarnan McLarnon, who was the leading Irish player after an opening 69, joined Flogas Irish Amateur Open champion Robin Dawson in missing the level par cut by a shot.
Well done @john_murphy5 Pretty rare to have three 2s on your card around St Andrews. @GUIGolf @IrishGolfDesk

Dawson dropped three shots in his last six holes to shoot 73 and finish on 144 as McLarnon, who was undone by a triple bogey seven at the 15th, shot 75.
Hermitage’s Rowan Lester shot 71 but missed out by two on 145 with Alex Gleeson (146), Caolan Rafferty (147), Jake Whelan (148), Ronan Mullarney (150), Barry Anderson and Conor Purcell (152) completing the Irish scoring.
South Africa’s Christo Lamprecht (17), who won the East of Ireland title at County Louth on Monday, is tied for third and lurking just two shots off the lead after a 67.
