Roscommon claim Fred Daly Trophy in epic finale
Fionn Hoare beat Stephen Riordan at the 20th to give Roscommon an epic 3-2 win over Muskerry in the All Ireland Final of the Fred Daly Trophy at Castle Dargan.
The Connacht champions beat Slieve Russell 3.5-1.5 in the sem-finals as Muskerry overcame Mullingar 4-1 at the Patrick Merrigan and Darren Clarke design in Sligo
With two hours lost to the weather early in the day, the final went on late into the evening as Roscommon’s Thomas Higgins beat Jack Egan 3&2 to level the scores after Simon Walker had put Roscommon ahead with a two hole win over Fionn Hickey.
Cian O’Connor restored Roscommon’s lead with a 3&2 win over Zak Collins before the last two matches went to extra holes.
After Eoghan Shaughnessy beat Kevin Connaughton at the 19th to level the scores at 2-2, Hoare came through at the 20th to give Roscommon their first win in the event and only the second green pennant in the club’s history.
“We are all over the moon,” said team captain Michael Connaughton after Roscommon bridged a 43-year gap to their 1976 Pierce Purcell Shield triumph. “It’s a great achievement by the lads. They played their hearts out.”
