Flogas to sponsor Connacht champions CBS Roscommon at Irish Schools Finals
Flogas will sponsor Connacht kingpins CBS Roscommon in the GUI’s Irish Schools Senior Championship Finals at Macroom on 18 August.
It will be the school’s third year in a row representing Connacht at the Finals, which they won in 2018 and were semi-finalists in 2019.
The talented teens all played a part in Roscommon Golf Club’s epic Fred Daly Trophy win last September. Alongside manager and teacher Mark Hodgins, they are aiming for a second Irish Senior Schools win in 2020 as for three of them, it will be their last time to compete for their school.
The team comprises brothers Alan Connaughton (18) and Kevin Connaughton (17) from Roscommon town, sixth-year and TY students respectively; sixth-year student Michael Corcoran (18) from Kilteevan; TY student Thomas Higgins (17) from Ballybride; TY student Fionn Hoare (17) from Golf Links Road; TY student Cian O’Connor (17), Knockcroghery and sixth-year student Simon Walker (19) from Roscommon town.
At the photocall to announce the sponsorship in the garden of the Edmund Rice Autism Centre on the school grounds, Donal Moran, the local Flogas company representative said: “We’re delighted to be sponsoring the CBS Roscommon team, which has worked very hard to get to the Finals and we know they will do their province proud. We wish them the very best of luck.”
The Championship is organised by the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI), the governing body for the sport in Ireland.
On Tuesday, 18 August at Macroom Golf Club in Cork, the CBS Roscommon team will tee off against the winners of the other three provinces: Blackrock College for Leinster, Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig for Munster and RBAI Belfast for Ulster.
Fiona Gallagher, principal, CBS Roscommon, said: “I am very proud of our team and the passion and dedication they have shown in reaching the final of this very high-profile Championship. I especially want to thank my fellow teacher Mark Hodgins for all the hard work that he has put into managing the team. The entire school will be wishing them the very best!”
