Seamus Power will have to wait a little longer to make his 2020 debut after failing to come through Monday qualifying for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.
The affable West Waterford man (32) finished well off the pace at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta - the hometown of Rickie Fowler — where he shot a seven-over 79 to finish tied 84th in the 90-man field.
There were just four places up for grabs alongside the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at Torrey Pines and a playoff was necessary after Cornwall’s Harry Hall and Jacob Bergeron claimed the top two spots with six-under 66s.
There was a five-man playoff for the last two spots which saw KK Limbhasut and Edward Olson emerge at the expense of fellow 67s shooters Kevin Lucas, David Pastore and Chandler Blanchet.
Neither Hall, Bergeron, Limbhasut or Olson have earned cash on the PGA Tour but they now have the chance to battle it out for their share of $7,500,000 purse with the winner claiming $1,350,000.
Power finished 130th in the FedEx Cup standings last season and is playing in the 126-150 category this term.
He has played five times in 2019-20 so far, making two cuts with his best finish a tie for 31st in the Bermuda Championship in November.
