Double up for Mullingar couple
Winning the President’s Prize is a big deal in any household but the husband and wife team of John and Karen Shaw were successful on the double at Mullingar Golf Club recently.
Playing off 12, John won President Eugene Hill’s Prize with a magnificent score of 99 nett over 27 holes.
Not to be outdone, his wife Karen proved her hole-in-one on the 15th in the Lady Vice-Captain’s Prize in 2018 was no flash in the pan when she had a sensational 46 points off 28 to win Lady President Anne Duffy’s by five points from Olive Whelehan.
The event was a huge success for the ladies branch with Lady President Anne spearheading the collection of €1,600 for TEAM (Temporary Emergency Accommodation Mullingar) as 137 teed it up.
Karen’s success was also a boost for the club’s hugely successful Get Into Golf Programme as she only took up the game in 2013 and is now a “Major” champion.
“It was a big surprise but I just played well on the day,” Karen said, who was cut five strokes to 23. “I got lucky and the weather was good, so that was a big help.
“Mullingar is a great club, very homely and very well-kept and I am so glad I joined through the Get Into Golf Scheme after dabbling a bit in the game before that.”
