Brendan Walton wins Moran Cup - 36 years after Philip
Portmarnock Links professional Brendan Walton followed in the footsteps of his uncle Philip on Monday when he added his name to the record books with victory in the prestigious Moran Cup at Royal Dublin.
Raised on the links at The Island, Walton drove the 16th green and made the putt for an eagle two to card a three-under 69 and win the title by four shots from Liam Power, Mullingar’s James Quinlivan, Sutton’s Paddy Devine, St Margaret’s Shane Jenkinson and SQ Golf’s Stephen Quinlan.
“Delighted to have won The Moran Cup at Royal Dublin1,” said Walton, whose uncle Philip won the Moran Cup at Castle in 1984. “It’s such an honour to have my name on the trophy alongside so many revered Irish PGA professionals over the years.”
Ryder Cup star Walton won the Moran Cup 36 years ago to round off his first year as a professional in style.
He shot a two-under 68 at Castle on 17 October 1984 to tie with Bray professional Michael Walby. At the first playoff hole, the 14th, he missed a two and a half footer for birdie for the title. But he went on to claim the trophy by holing a 25 footer for a winning birdie two at the par-three 15th as Walby sized up a 10 footer for par having missed the green.
