Seamus Power will get to start the new year earlier than expected after earning a late call-up for this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii.

The West Waterford star (33), who is playing out of the 126-150 category this season, was hoping to start 2021 in next week’s American Express at La Quinta.

However, he learned last night he was in the field (subject to a negative Covid-19 test) as he winged his way to Waialae after Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas withdrew after testing positive.

Vegas, who was set to make his first start since the Mayakoba Golf Classic presented by UNIFIN in December, will have the PGA TOUR’s full support throughout his self-isolation period under CDC guidelines.

It will be Power’s fourth start in the Sony Open in Hawaii.

He tied for 49th in 2017 before following a tied 54th finish in 2018 with a missed cut in 2019.

Power has played 10 rounds at Waialae Country Club averaging 69.4 with his best round a four-under 66 in the second round in 2017.
