Sharvin and Carbery claim spoils at Portmarnock Links

Cormac Sharvin bounced back from his COVID-19 enforced absence from last week’s AVIV Dubai Championship to win the gross in the TaylorMade Winter Series at Portmarnock Links.

The European Tour player shot a two-under 69 to win by two strokes from Steven Quinlan and amateur Keith Egan as Portmarnock Links’ Niall Carbery won the nett with a 69, edging out Tynam Neville and Gary Cullen by a shot.

Sharvin made three birdies and three bogeys to turn in level and while he followed birdies at the 13th and 14th with a bogey at the 17th, he birdied the last for his 69.

Carbery, who was playing off an adjusted handicap of five, went out in level par “making at least seven par-saving putts that would normally never drop.”

He then came home in three-over for a 74, nett 69 on a day when 98 played in a pleasant 13 degrees with only a light wind blowing across the links.

Egan bogeyed the fifth but birdied the sixth, eighth and ninth to turn in two-under, then followed bogeys at the 10th, 12th and 15th with a birdie at the 18th for his 70.

Quinlan made five birdies and five bogeys in his 71 while Cullen, playing off one, birdied the sixth ninth and 11th en route to a nett 70.

Neville (5.9 but playing off eight yesterday) went out in three-over-par with bogeys at the third, fourth and seventh before following bogeys at the 12th and 13th with a double-bogey at the 15th for a gross 78, nett 70.
