Quinlan and Buckley beat biting north wind at Portmarnock Links
Professional Steven Quinlan and Lisburn amateur Patrick Buckley took the top prizes as 75 players endured a cold north wind in the TaylorMade Winter Series at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links.
Quinlan took the gross with a one-over 72 as he mixed birdies at the sixth and ninth with a bogey at the first and a double-bogey at the 14th.
He edged out Newlands’ Charlie Connell, who was two-under through 10 holes but bogeyed the par-five 13th, double-bogeyed the 14th and then followed a birdie on the 16th with bogeys at the 17th and 18th for his 73.
World Disabled Golf number two Brendan Lawlor was third in the gross with a three-over 74.
He birdied the first and bogeyed the fifth and ninth to turn in one-over, then came home in two over par as he followed seven straight pars with bogeys 17th and 18th.
Playing off nine on the day, Buckley made one birdie (sixth), five bogeys (third, fifth, 12th, 13th, 15th) and three double-bogeys (first, seventh and 18th) in a 72 to win the nett by a shot from Lisburn’s Chris Moulds, who played off scratch and mixed three birdies (first, second, fourth) in his first four holes with three bogeys (seventh, eighth, 10th) and a double-bogey at the last for his 73.
Portmarnock Links’ Declan Walsh, playing off six on the day, was third with nett 74 going out in four-over before coming home in five over with most of the damage done by an eight at the 13th, where he drove out of bounds.
