The first board of Golf Ireland was ratified at the inaugural AGM on Saturday with women occupying six of the 13 seats — 46 per cent — as part of its drive for greater equality in the game.

Taking over from the Transition Board, chaired by Tim O’Connor, the first board is tasked with developing a strategy for Golf Ireland and will be accountable to affiliate clubs through the annual general meeting.

It is replete with new names, heralding the start of a new era but also the loss of some hugely experienced names in all four provinces.

Co. Armagh Golf Club’s John White has the honour of being the first President of Golf Ireland, a post he will hold for 2021 before Kay O’Loughlin from nine-hole Castlerea in Co Roscommon assumes the office for 2022.

In relation to the positions of the President and President-Elect, there is a rotation which specifies the region and gender of both positions in each year - Ulster male and Connacht female respectively in year one

Paul Haran, a former Secretary-General of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, with considerable experience in both the public and private sectors takes on the role of Chairperson.

Only two members of the Transition Board were permitted to serve as Directors on the full board proper with John Power and Pauline Bailie occupying those roles.

Board of Directors in full:

John White (President), Kay O’Loughlin (President-Elect), Paul Haran (Chairperson), Jane Joyce, Gerri Houlihan, Barry Lynch, Peter Greene, Pauline Bailie, Teresa Byrne, Vinny Hammond, Martin Hynes, Sarah O'Connor, John Power.
