Maguire and Meadow six back in Virginia
Leona Maguire dropped three shots in her last two holes and Stephanie Meadow bogeyed the last to card one-over 72s and trail leader Wei-Ling Hsu by six shots after the opening round of the LPGA’s Pure Silk Championship in Virginia.
Fresh from qualifying for the US Women’s Open last week, Meadow (29) birdied the fifth but bogeyed the eighth to turn in level at Kingsmill Resort’s River Course.
She bogeyed the 13th but birdied the 15th to be level playing the last but took five to end the day tied 59th with Maguire.
The Co Cavan star made three birdies and two bogeys to turn in one-under but after sandwiching a bogey at the 12th between birdies at the 10th and 16th, she followed a bogey at the 17th with a closing double bogey six.
Jaded Chinese Taipei star Hsu made five birdies in a bogey-free 66 to lead by one stroke from Korea’s Jiwon Jeon and Sei Young Kim, China’s Ruixin Liu, Spain’s Luna Sabron and Malaysia’s Kelly Tan.
“I’ve only slept I will say 20 hours in the last five days,” Hsu said after her 8,500-mile trip from Chonburi and the Honda LPGA Thailand to Williamsburg.
“Since I didn't get much sleep, I didn't really expect much this week. Just try to sleep and relax and play golf.
“I mean, I’m so tired.”
