West Waterford members buy club at auction for €1.25m

West Waterford members have averted the sale of their club by purchasing it at an online auction for a fee believed to be €1.25 million.

The 28-year-old club was in danger of being sold by the receiver to a third party and retuning to agricultural use.

But the members managed to generate the funds required to save the club and ensure the Eddie Hackett designed course near Dungarvan remains as a golf course.

The club is home to Seamus Power, who recently claimed the Barbasol Championship for his maiden PGA Tour win.

The Waterford News and Star reported:

At first it was believed that a bid €1.125 million had secured the sale before it emerged that the property was to be withdrawn after failing to reach the €1.2 million reserve price.

Auctioneers, Colliers,  remained in talks with the parties involved to discuss the sale of the property and we understand that these discussions have resulted in a consortium of members and financial backers having their undisclosed bid accepted tonight.
