Close champion Quentin Carew set for next week's Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup

Pat O’Sullivan, President, Castletroy GC, Eamonn Finn of Trade Electric Group and Paul Micks, Captain, Castletroy Golf Club, officially launch the 2022 Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup sponsored by Trade Electric Group.

Recently-crowned AIG Irish Amateur Close champion Quentin Carew will tee it up in what looks like being a strong field for the prestigious Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday, 10 September.

Carew, who is now playing out of Castleknock Golf Club, made a triumphant return to his life-long club, Edenderry Golf Club last week. But he will be looking to shine in Co Limerick in an event sponsored again this year by Trade Electric Group.

First played in 1948, the Castletroy trophy is one of the oldest and most prestigious scratch cups in the country and attracts the cream of Munster golf and many of Ireland's best amateur golfers each year.

The course, currently ranked in the top 100 in Ireland and measuring almost 7,000 yards off the back tees, consistently offers a stiff challenge to any player on the senior scratch cup circuit.

Past winners include holder Rob Moran, former Amateur champion James Sugrue , Gary O'Flaherty, Pat Murray and Eddie McCormack not to mention such names as JB Carr, Liam Higgins, Eddie Power, Vincent Nevin and Des Smyth.

This year’s field will feature the likes of Irish international Rob Brazill, current Senior international  Joe Lyons, Leinster’s Keith Egan and Paul Coughlan, Connacht’s David Kitt, Simon Walker and Harry Gillivan; Ulster interpros Ryan Griffin and Shane McDermott;  Munster’s Darragh Flynn, Conor Hickey, Dave Reddan and Jack Walshm, five members the Irish Boys team and former Mullingar Scratch Cup winner Jason Rackard.

Entries are invited to Castletroy Golf Club at (061) 335 753 or golf@castletroygolfclub.ie

The handicap limit is a handicap index of 2.4 and confined to the lowest 72 entrants.

There will be gunshot starts at 9 am and 2.30 pm and the €35 entry fee includes lunch.

Closing date for entries is 5pm sharp on Thursday, 8 September.
