Entries open for Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup
Castletroy Golf Club has announced details of the 2023 Senior Scratch Cup, kindly sponsored by Trade Electric Group. The competition takes place on Saturday, 2nd September.
First staged in 1948, the Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup (the Major HK Murray trophy) is one of the oldest and most prestigious scratch cups in the country and attracts many of Ireland's best amateur golfers each year.
The course, currently ranked in the top 100 in Ireland and measuring almost 7,000 yards off the back tees, consistently offers a stiff challenge to any player on the senior scratch cup or championship circuit.
The 2022 winner was, Connaught Interprovincial golfer, Simon Walker (Roscommon GC).
Recent winners include Irish international, Rob Moran(2021), and former South of Ireland and British Amateur champion, James Sugrue, who won the trophy in 2017 and 2019.
Other former winners include Gary O’Flaherty, Pat Murray, and Eddie McCormack, not to mention the illustrious names of JB Carr, Liam Higgins, Eddie Power, and Des Smyth.
Over the years, local golfers such as Eamon Haugh, Michael O’Kelly, John Kavanagh, Peter Sheehan, and Jason Tobin have also lifted this prestigious trophy.
Along with Simon, among those who have already signed up to compete this year are a former Irish Close champion, various representative golfers and a number of in-form players from the 2023 Bridgestone Men’s Order of Merit.

The handicap limit is WHS of 2.4 and confined to the lowest 72 entrants.
Shotgun starts at 9am and 2.30pm on the day.
The entry fee of €40 includes lunch.
Closing date for entries is 5pm sharp on Thursday, 31st August.
