Ireland's men fall to Spain in Octagonal matches; women's quartet cut in Portugal

Ireland fell 6.5-2.5 to hosts and defending champions Spain and will battle England for third place on the final day of the Octagonal Matches in Cadiz.

Foursomes defeats for Peter O’Keeffe and Liam Nolan and Matt McClean and Hugh Foley, both by 2&1, left Ireland 2.5-0.5 down at Costa Ballena and McClean (the reigning US Mid-Amateur champion) was the only player to win his singles, beating Jose Antonio Sintes 3&2.

The Netherlands beat England 5-4 and now take on Spain for the title.

In the Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship at Montado Golf Resort near Lisbon, Marina Joyce Moreno shot 76 but missed the 54-hole cut by a shot on 14-over 230.

Kate Lanigan shot 76 and Rebekah Gardener 82 to leave them on 237 with Aideen Walsh on 246 after an 82.

Spain’s Rocío Tejedo and Italy’s Francesca Fiorellini lead Spain’s Paula de Francisco Liaño by two strokes on three-under 213 with Wales’ Darcey Harry and Harriet Lockley in a six-strong group on level par 216.

Meanwhile, Roganstown’s Patrick Keeling opened with a five-under 67 to lead by one stroke after the opening round Copa Région de Murcia where David Shiel iies fifth after a 70 and Pádraig O Dochartaigh 12th after a 74.
