Abom and Fleming win Intervarsity titles
Maynooth University’s Liam Abom revelled in his first piece of silverware as he claimed the Irish Intervarsity Championship at Laytown and Bettystown.
The 20-year-old carded a brilliant four-under 67 on Friday to claim the victory by three shots over UCD’s Emma Fleming, who picked up the women's title.
Meanwhile, Maynooth University also claimed the team event with Abom and Simon Walker finishing ahead of UCD on 10 under.
The Edmondstown man shared the individual lead with his colleague, Eoin Murphy, on six under overnight with another three players just a shot further back.
However as the conditions improved on Friday morning, the scoring got better too.
Fleming was first to make a move and she joined the leader after a birdie on the second but Abom caught fire from the fourth hole onwards, a streak that began with an eagle.
He followed up with three birdies by the 11thand he remained composed throughout the back nine to take the title.
Abom had a solid round of 70 on Wednesday but when he added a 66 in Round 2 it really gave him the opportunity to strike, and he took full advantage.
“It feels good, it’s the first time I’ve won a real tournament. It’s really satisfying to do it,” said Abom.
“During the year I had some good rounds but I didn’t really put it together. I just played really solid for the whole week. It is really good to get it done.”
Robbie Walsh Jnr (UCC) was another player who carded 66 on Thursday and although he sunk an eagle on the fourth, a double bogey on the seventh blotted his scorecard.
Jordan Boles (Maynooth University) and Murphy were also in contention during the back nine on Friday but they couldn’t push on enough to trouble Abom.
“I have been playing well and then I dropped off a bit at the end of August and September. I feel like I have been trending in the right direction. It all just paid off in this last week,” said Abom.
“It’s good motivation to get back out there in the tournaments next year and give them a good run. It feels really good.”
