McElroy in the hunt at Sotogrande
Ballymena’s Dermot McElroy fired a one under par 71 to lie just three shots behind Scotland’s Ross Kellet after the second round of the European Nations Cup at the Real Club de Golf in Sotogrande.
The Ulsterman is tied for sixth place with Portugal’s Tomas Silva on four under par as Kellet’s 68 gave him a two-stroke lead over Spain’s Antonio Hortal, Austria’s Lukas Nemecz, Finland’s Miro Veijalainen and France’s Julien Brun.
Ireland slipped back to fifth place in the team contest on 431, seven strokes behind England who hold a one shot lead over hosts Spain with Scotland four adrift in third.
Portstewart’s Paul Cutler posted a second successive 72 and Banbridge’s Rory Leonard a 76 as Rathmore’s Alan Dunbar’s disappointing 79 was discarded.
Cutler is tied for 15th, seven strokes off the lead with Dunbar tied 36th on six over and Leonard joint 55th on 11 over.
