The Kerryman, who was four shots outside the top 17 and ties who will progress from the Roxburghe Hotel and Golf Course at halfway, is now just inside the magic number on one over par with a round to go.
He’s one of five Irishmen hoping to finish inside the qualifying places ahead of Friday’s fourth round after Killarney’s Danny Sugrue (78 76 71) and Kilkenny’s Gary Murphy (81 73 76) missed the 54 hole cut and Newlands’ Andrew Hogan (77-79) retired.
Ballyliffin’s Damien Mooney heads the quintet of survivors on two under after a 71 left him tied for sixth place, five shots behind co-leaders Jamie Moul (the former world amateur No 1) and Sweden’s Philip Eriksson.
The Island’s David Rawluk is the next best, tied for 14th with Murphy on one-over after a second successive 72.
However, Murphy’s close pal Peter O’Keeffe of Douglas, who was well placed after opening rounds of 72 and 70, failed to make a birdie in a six over 78 and slipped three shots outside the qualifying spots on four over.
Mark Staunton bogeyed his last two holes for a rollercoaster, two over 74 to make the cut on the eight over par mark to keep his hopes alive of a final round charge.
