Mooney and Rawluk progress at Q-School
David Rawluk is through to stage two of Q-School in Spain in early November.Ballyliffin’s Damian Mooney and The Island’s David Rawluk were the only Irishmen among the 20 qualifiers from the European Tour Qualifying School First Stage event at The Roxburghe.
Mooney close with a two under par 70 to finish fourth on four under par, six shots behind leading qualifier Philip Eriksson of Sweden, who won by three strokes from Jamie Moul and Zane Scotland.
Rawluk finished in a share of seventh place to finish among the top 17 and ties on two under par.
Just inside the qualifying places starting the final round, the pressure was on the Europro Tour regular who came through with a superb, bogey free 69.
David Rawluk listens to coach Johnny Foster during a winter lesson. Birdies at the fourth and fifth eased the pressure and he then made sure of his place at Stage Two in Spain next month with a birdie three at the 17th.
“Delighted with how I scored this week, as I really wasn’t feeling great with my full swing,” said Rawluk, who uses swing coach Johnny Foster and fitness coach Robbie Cannon. “Course management and short game was excellent!”
There was disappointment for the other three Irishman who made the 54-hole cut.
Waterville’s Mark Murphy, who began the final day tied for 14th with Rawluk on one over, closed with a two over 74 to miss out by two shots.
The Kerryman recovered well from bogeys at the first and third when he birdied the fifth, eighth and 10th. But he dropped shots coming in at the 11th, 16th and 17th to end up tied for 23rd on three over.
Peter O’Keeffe faced an uphill task after his third round 78 and four dropped shots in his first five holes killed his chances as he posted a 75 to miss out by six strokes on seven over.
Mark Staunton, who survived the three round cut on the mark, closed with a fine 71 to end up tied for 39th with O’Keeffe on seven over.
Players from 18 different countries were among the 43 qualifiers who progressed through the First Qualifying Stage Section A.
Rodolfo Cazaubon moved a step closer to becoming only the second Mexican to earn a place on The European Tour when he led the 23 qualifiers from Ebreichsdorf GC at the First Qualifying Stage Section A.
Cazaubon shot a closing 67 for a 20 under par aggregate of 268 to finish three clear of Germany’s Stefan Wiedergrün. The only Mexican golfer to earn fully exempt status on the European Tour to date was Rafael Alarcon in 1985.
Players from 13 different nationalities, including from emerging golfing nations such as Russia, the Czech Republic and China as well as Mexico, were among the 23 who finished on 281, seven under par, or better.
A further five nationalities were represented among the 20 qualifiers from The Roxburghe with Swede Philip Eriksson leading the way to the Second Stage with a final round of 69 for a ten under par total of 278 and a three-stroke victory.
The English pair of Scotland and Moul finished second while Brenden Gielow, one of three Americans to make it through the First Qualifying Stage in Scotland and Austria, shooting the low final round of 66 to progress to the next phase.
A total of 43 players progressed through and will take their place in the Second Qualifying Stage, to take place in the first week of November over four courses in Spain leading to the Final Stage at PGA Catalunya Resort.
The First Qualifying Stage continues next week as more hopefuls begin their quest for a place on The European Tour with Section B taking place at Wychwood Park in England and Golf and Country Club Fleesensee in Germany, a European Tour Destination.
