Albatross gives McGimpsey South Africa win
UPDATED: Bangor's Garth McGimpsey continues to be as competitive as ever, even in far away South Africa. But this time it took an albatross two on his penultimate hole to claim victory.
Just last Friday, the 14-time championship winner captured the Cape Winelands Senior Open at stunning De Zalze Golf Club near Stellenbosch in South Africa. Results Scorecard
Garth takes up the story:
"I was two behind playing the par-5 17th. It's amazing what an albatross two will do to your score. Managed to par the last to win by one. Lucky or what?"
He added: "First ever, 4 iron 212 yards, slight breeze behind. Never left the stick."
He carded rounds of 72 and 71 to win by a stroke on one under par from Ivan Palframan with Bangor's Mark McMurray tied for eighth on six over (75-75).
McGimpsey was back in action on Monday, finishing joint runner-up in the Boland Senior Open at Paarl Golf Club.
The former British Amateur winner shot rounds of 71 and 73 to finish on level par, four strokes behind the winner. Fellow clubman McMurray tied for eighth once more. Results - PDF | Web
