Campbell leads Irish charge for Brabazon Trophy - one off the pace
Warrenpoint’s Colm Campbell made four birdies in a two under 70 that left him just a shot off the pace after the opening round of the Brabazon Trophy at Hollinwell.
The Ulster interprovincial is in a four way tie for fourth place behind Austria’s Lukas Lipold and England’s Ben Taylor and Jordan Wrisdale, who opened with three under 69s.
Just 25 players shot par or better and they included Ardglass’ Cormac Sharvin and The Island’s Kevin LeBlanc, who shot one under 71s to share eighth spot.
It was a tougher day for the rest of the Irish though Dermot McElroy, Conor O’Rourke, Jack Hume, Paul McBride and Paul Dunne are all well in touch, tied for 26th after one over 73s.
The field will cut to the leading 60 players and ties after today’s second round, however, which leaves The Island’s Gavin Moynihan (74), Co Sligo’s Sean Flanagan (74) just inside the mark.
Daniel Hollland (76), Robin Dawson (76) and Richard Bridges (82) have work to do.
