Phelan lurking in Madeira

Mount Juliet's Kevin Phelan had five birdies in a 69 to share 11th spot at halfway in the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI. 

Englishman Sam Walker and Pontus Widegren of Sweden shot 66s to tie for the lead at Santo da Serra on 11 under with Phelan on five under. 

While the afternoon groups enjoyed sunnier skies and lighter breezes on the Portuguese archipelago island, nobody could take advantage and displace the leading duo, who ended the day a shot clear of the first round pacesetter Antonio Hortal of Spain.

Rosapenna's touring pro Ruaidhri McGee was the only other Irish player to make the cut though his 73 left him nine behind,

Peter Lawrie (74) and Simon Thornton missed the two under par cut by five and seven shots respectively.
