Mehaffey and Fairweather lurking in Peru
Olivia Mehaffey and Colin Fairweather are just three strokes off the pace at the halfway stage of their respective events in the South American Amateur Championship in Peru.
Royal County Down Ladies' star Mehaffey, now 11th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, posted a one under par 71 in the second round at Lima Golf Club to go into round three tied for ninth place, on level par.
She's three strokes behind Peru's Lucía Gutierrez (69) and New Zealand's Chantelle Cassidy (69), who lead by a shot on three under from Paraguay's Lucía García, posted a best of the day 67.
Castletroy's Chloe Ryan bounced back to form with three birdies a 75 that moved her up to tied 46th.
In the men's championship, Knock powerhouse Fairweather had two eagles. two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey in a rollercoaster, one over 73.
The Ulster star ended up slipping to tied sixth but at three under he's still just three strokes adrift of Welshman David Boote, who added a 70 to his opening 68 to lead by one stroke on six under from Argentina's Matias Simaski in the R&A backed event.
Massereene's Tiarnan McLarnon, the Irish Close champion, dropped just one shot in an excellent, one under 71 that moved him up to tied 36th on five over.
