Louise Coffey edges out Deirdre Smith at Woodbrook

Louise Coffey

Malone’s Louise overcame tough conditions edge out County Louth’s Deirdre Smith by a stroke in the Cassidy Travel sponsored Woodbrook Ladies Senior Scratch Cup.

The experienced Ulster player knows what it takes to win around Woodbrook having captured the East of Ireland Mixed Foursomes with Peter O’Neill in 2014 and finished as runner up to Lucy Simpson in the scratch cup in 2013.

An opening, one over 75 gave her a three-stroke lead over Shannon Burke and while Smith pressed in the afternoon with a wonderful 75, Coffey proved too strong and an 80 was enough to win by one stroke on seven over 155.

Meadhbh Doyle (159), Nicola Coffey (162), Gemma McCarthy (162) and Aedin Murphy (163) rounded out the top-six while Burke’s 172 took the Under 21 gross prize.

There was also an excellent performance by 10-handicap Georgia Carr, who won the nett prize with rounds of 87 and 85.
