Mehaffey starts well in Johannesburg
Olivia Mehaffey took up where she left off last week and opened with a two-under 70 to share 10th place after the opening round of the ABSA Ladies Invitational at Royal Johannesburg.
After finishing fourth in the Platinum Ladies Open, the Banbridge native was keen to keep the momentum going.
She was two-over with six holes to play but birdied the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth on her back nine to come home in 34 and shoot two-under.
Her 70 left her just three shots behind Spanish veteran Carmen Alonso -and South Africa’s Casandra Alexander, whose 67s gave them a one-shot lead.
It was also a good day for LET rookie Canice Screene, who made two birdies and a bogey in a solid 71 to share 21st, just four shots off the lead.
