Skerries' Maria Dunne finished just a shot behind the winner in the South American Amateur Championship in Peru.

The Irish international needed a birdie at the 18th to force a playoff with clubhouse leader Sofia Garcia of Paraguay, who had set the target at six over par thanks to a closing 73 at Lima Golf Club.

In the end it was not to be as the Irish star made a par four, closing with a three over 75 to share second spot on seven over par with Mexico's Maria Fassi (75), Paraguay's Milagros Chavez (74) and overnight leader Emma Dryburgh, who bogeyed the last three holes for a 77.

Lurgan's Paula Grant (77 76 76 79) tied for 18th on 20 over par but there was also a good result for Ireland in the men's championship.

While US Mid-Amateur champion Scott Harvey completed a wire-to-wire win, closing with a 73 to win by two strokes from Brazil's Andre Tourinho (72), Peru's Patricio Alzamora (69) and Chile's Joaquin Niemann (69) on nine under, Moyola Park's Chris Selfridge (73-71-72-72) tied for ninth on level par.

The Island's Paul McBride (74-74-74-73), now based at Wake Forest University, tied for 25th on seven over.
