Power move as Mark wins Peter McEvoy Trophy by two

Kilkenny's Mark Power proved that good golfing genes don't do you any harm when he came from one stroke behind at halfway to win the Peter McEvoy Trophy by two strokes at Copt Heath Golf Club.

The 15-year old son of Eddie Power and Eileen Rose Power (née McDaid), both three-time Irish Close champions, carded an even par 71 in the morning round in the prestigious Boys event to share third spot with Nicholas Elmy on four under par, one stroke behind Matty Lamb and Callum Farr.

But he proved too good in the end, carding three under pr 68 to win by two shots from Jack Ainscough on seven under par and become the second Irish champion since Gavin Moynihan in 2012.

Despite an early bogey at the second, Power had twos at the short third and fifth holes, then picked up another shot at the par-five seventh to go out in 33 and lead on his own with nine to play.

He then came home in one under 35 with a bogey at the 16th sandwiched between birdies at the 14th and 17th to secure a memorable victory.

County Louth's Thomas Mulligan (67 74 75 70) was 14th on two over with George Clarke from Druids Heath (73 73 69 77) 34th on eight over, Rosslare's John Brady (69 75 75 75) 39th on 10 over and Cairndhu's Marc McKinstry (73 73 78 72) 42nd on 12 over

Notable former winners include Peter Baker (1983), Lee Westwood (1991), Brian Davis (1992), Steve Webster (1993) and Justin Rose (1998).
